Castelul Peles nu a avut niciodata functii militare (la fel ca si Pelisor si Foisor, palate situate in preajma sa), dar poarta titulatura de castel din cauza arhitecturii cu turnuri. In mod normal, trebuie incadrat printre palate, indeplinind functia de palat regal/resedinta de vara a regilor Romaniei.
